Buried Village

An opportunity to visit New Zealand’s Pompeii. The village of Te Wairoa was the starting point for visits to the Pink and White Terraces. The village, along with the Terraces, was completely destroyed when Mount Tarawera erupted violently in 1886. Today the partly excavated village has immense historical, cultural and spiritual value as visitors enter a world from the past. Hear the stories of Tarawera come to life in the world class museum, explore the original excavated site, experience the tranquility of this now peaceful village and view one of the district’s most spectacular waterfalls via a native forest walk.
