Rest of Northland

Rest of Northland

Why go here? The evocative magic of ancient forests, immense beaches and two harbours steeped in history.

Need to know ...

From the scenic icons of the far north to the wild isolation of the west coast and the sophistication of Whangarei in the east, Northland features remarkable diversity. The Twin Coast Discovery Highway offers the ultimate overview. On the east coast, the harbour city of Whangarei is an ideal base for exploring the white sandy beaches of Bream Bay and the Poor Knight Islands Marine Reserve on the Tutukaka Coast. In the far north, explore Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach and travel off the beaten track to discover places like Ahipara and Doubtless Bay. On the west coast, be transported far from the ordinary in a region of quiet harbours, Maori culture and ancient kauri forests. Even the smallest outpost has its own pioneering stories to discover.

Did you know?

Notable Culture

The Hokianga Harbour on the west coast is thought to be the place where New Zealand’s first Maori settlers, led by the legendary explorer Kupe in his waka (canoe) ‘Matawhourua’, made landfall 1,000 years ago.

Moment in History

In the 1850s, the west coast of Northland attracted a huge influx of Dalmation migrants drawn by a boom in Kauri logging and gum digging. The gum was exported to North America for use in varnish, paints and linoleum.

Note This!

Ninety Mile Beach on the west coast of Northland is not actually ninety miles long – it is 88 km (55 miles) in length.

Northland Wineries

The sub-tropical Northland region is not immediately obvious as a wine-growing area, but it is home to a selection of inviting wineries that are well worth a visit. Karikari Estate Winery (Maitai Bay Rd, Karikari Peninsula, Kaitaia, t +64 9 408 7222) – this award-winning winery took home two gold medals for the 2004 Karikari Estate Pinotage and 2004 Karikari Estate Merlot Malbec Cabernet at the 2005 Bragato Awards. Longview Estate (SH1, Otaika, Whangarei, t +64 9 438 7227) – the Whangarei region’s oldest established vineyard occupies a gorgeous setting overlooking the picturesque harbour. Okahu Estate Vineyard & Winery (Cnr Okahu & Pukepoto Rd, Kaitaia, t +64 9 408 2066) – located just south of Kaitaia, Okahu Estate produces Syrah, a Cabernet / Merlot blend and Chambourcin from its own vineyard.
