Fernside

Fernside offers relaxing hospitality and superb cuisine in one of New Zealand's finest historic homes. Attentive yet discreet service in a spectacular setting contributes to a relaxed and memorable experience. Meals are designed to be exciting with fresh local produce including lobster, lamb and venison completemented with excellent wines from nearby vineyards.

Fernside was designed in the genre of English architect Sir Edwin (Ned) Lutyens with gardens in the style of Gertrude Jekyll. The grand living areas, four large ensuite bedrooms and park-like gardens contribute to the perfect setting for a memorable escape from today's cyber-world.

Wellington is only one hour away by road or rail and, for those touring The Classic New Zeland Wine Trail, fernside is a natural mid-point - a chance to recharge the batteries. Nearby are spectacular natural attractions and more modern enticements such as wineries, museums and outdoor adventures.

Fernside is historically significant. The Lutyens/Jekyll heritage and origins in New Zealand's pastoral wealth, of the early 20th Century, enticed the American Government to purchase Fernside as an Ambassadorial residence in the 1940's. More recently, Peter Jackson selected Fernside's gardens as a location for key scenes in JRR Tolkein's Lord of the rings. The Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa, in Wellington retains Fernside's antiques, the Elgar Collection, as a symbol of New Zealand's colonial and pastoral heritage.
