Notable Culture
According to Maori legend, the thermal pools at Hanmer Springs are a piece
of the fires of Tamatea that dropped from the sky after an eruption of Mt Ngauruhoe
in the Central
North Island.
Moment in History
For centuries the thermal pools at Hanmer Springs were used by Maori travelling through the area. In 1859, William Jones, a farmer, became the first European to discover the pools. The first bathhouse was built in 1883.
