The easy and pleasant 370km drive around the Alpine Pacific Triangle touring route is best enjoyed over several days. For decades the alpine spa village of Hanmer Springs has been a popular holiday destination for New Zealanders; enjoy the alpine environment with its forest, rivers and mountains. At the southern point of the triangle is Waipara Valley, New Zealand’s fastest growing wine area, producing around 150,000 cases of wine in an average year.

By Air – Christchurch has the nearest airport.
By Road – The Alpine Pacific Triangle begins 45 minutes north of Christchurch. 1 hour, 55 minutes from Christchurch to Hanmer Springs. There are regular shuttle transfers from Christchurch.

Notable Culture

According to Maori legend, the thermal pools at Hanmer Springs are a piece of the fires of Tamatea that dropped from the sky after an eruption of Mt Ngauruhoe in the Central
North Island.

Moment in History

For centuries the thermal pools at Hanmer Springs were used by Maori travelling through the area. In 1859, William Jones, a farmer, became the first European to discover the pools. The first bathhouse was built in 1883.

Planted as an experiment by the Government in 1902, Hanmer Forest is unique in New Zealand as a near-natural woodland of European trees.
