The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is our extraordinary, interactive national museum located on Wellington’s stunning waterfront. Te Papa is the most visited museum in Australasia, and is a ‘must see’ for visitors to the capital city.

Te Papa Tongarewa literally means ‘container of treasures’. Here you’ll discover the treasures and stories of New Zealand’s land and people, told with passion. Collections are spread over six floors of engaging, innovative displays. Explore Maori and Pacific cultural treasures, New Zealand’s extraordinary natural life, its most important works of art, and its unique history. With a combination of the latest technology and classic storytelling, Te Papa educates, entertains and inspires.

Experience an exquisitely carved marae (Maori meeting place), walk through living native bush and be shaken in the Earthquake House as it simulates an aftershock. View the national art collection, mix your own Pacific beats, then engage with the stories of New Zealand history. Come face-to-face with a Colossal Squid and learn about its life through 3D animation. Families can get hands-on in four themed interactive Discovery Centres. Explore OurSpace, an exciting multimedia experience and get adrenaline pumping with The High Ride or visit a volcano 2,000 metres under the sea on The Deep Ride. This is serious fun!
